Mestalla brimming with emotions running high
Relive the emotional events that took place in the run-up to Valencia CF-Real Betis to pay tribute to the victims and those affected by the tragic flash floods
Although Valencia CF's game against Real Zaragoza was a friendly, the event was still an emotional one, as both clubs paid tribute to former player Fernando Cáceres at halftime at the Pinatar Arena (Murcia).
The presidents of both clubs, Anil Murthy and Christian Lapetra, as well as Miguel Ángel Corona and Alberto Belsué -former teammates of Cáceres- posed on the pitch with a shirt signed by the players of both teams.
The Argentinian central defender, who played for both teams during his career, suffered adversity when he was shot in the head in November 2009, when resisting having his car stolen. This led to the loss of his right eye and a struggle to survive for a considerable time.
Fernando Cáceres played for Valencia CF for two seasons: 1996/97 and 1997/98. With Real Zaragoza he won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1995. He also played for Celta Vigo and Córdoba before returning to his native Argentina.
